Bonham, Texas: A Look at One of North Texas's Oldest Towns
Chapters

Bonham, Texas traces its roots back to 1837, when Bailey Inglish built a small fort roughly two miles from today's downtown — making it one of the oldest towns in North Texas, decades older than most of its neighbors in the Dallas-Fort Worth growth corridor.

How did Bonham get its name and its start?

The settlement went through two names before it became Bonham: it was first called Bois D'Arc, then briefly Bloomington, before the Republic of Texas renamed it in 1843 in honor of James Butler Bonham, a defender of the Alamo. The city was officially incorporated in 1848 and grew quickly once it became a division point on the Texas and Pacific Railroad in 1873 — by 1885 it had six churches, three colleges, and its own cotton mill, which at one point was the largest west of the Mississippi.

What is Bonham best known for today?

Bonham is the hometown of Sam Rayburn, the longest-serving Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in American history, and the town has preserved that legacy directly: the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum and his former residence (now a state historic site) are both still open to visitors. Beyond that, Bonham's historic downtown square retains much of its early-1900s character, making it a draw for buyers who want small-town charm with real architectural history behind it, not a reproduction.

What does the Bonham real estate market look like?

Bonham sits in Fannin County, east of Sherman and the Grayson County growth corridor, and it tends to offer more affordable entry points than Sherman or Denison for buyers who don't need to be directly on the water. It's a reasonable option for buyers browsing homes in the $100,000-$200,000 range or looking for in-town character without lakefront pricing.

Is Bonham a good fit for commuters or remote workers?

Bonham is close enough to Sherman for regular errands and healthcare, and it's within a manageable drive of the broader DFW job market for anyone willing to commute a bit further out than McKinney or Frisco in exchange for lower housing costs and a genuinely historic small-town feel. It suits buyers prioritizing affordability and character over proximity to the lake itself.
