Coalgate, Oklahoma: A Small Town With a Big Coal-Mining Past

Coalgate, Oklahoma is the county seat of Coal County, a small south-central Oklahoma community of around 1,700 people that was literally built around coal — the town's name comes from the steel gate that once separated incoming trains from the mines that put it on the map.

How did Coalgate get its name?

The town started in 1889 as a coal camp called Liddle, named for a mine superintendent, before it was renamed Coalgate in 1890 — a direct reference to the physical gate that controlled train access to the coal operation. At its peak in 1920, Coalgate had over 3,000 residents, more than it does today, driven almost entirely by coal mining under the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway's backing.

What happened to the coal industry in Coalgate?

Mining dominated the local economy until worker strikes in the 1920s led to widespread closures, and the town never fully returned to its coal-era population peak. A 1917 tornado had already destroyed over 200 homes and killed at least 11 people, and the Great Depression and a boll weevil infestation in the early 1920s compounded the area's economic struggles in the decades that followed.

What is Coalgate like today?

Coalgate has settled into life as a rural county seat, with agriculture and manufacturing having replaced coal as the area's economic base. It remains the hub for Coal County's local government and community life, even at a smaller scale than its early-1900s heyday.
